          Burlington Garden Club Celebrates
                      National Garden Week
 

               Celebrate National Garden Week: June 4-10, 2023 
SUNDAY, JUNE 4:
The Garden Conservancy OPEN DAYS GARDENS in Vermont. Tickets available on the website.

MONDAY, JUNE 5: Burlington Garden Club members donate and plant flowers/vegetables at Birchwood Terrace Rehab and Healthcare.
FLOWER DONATION DROPOFF 9:30–10:30 a.m. at Vermont GARDEN PARK
PLANTING 11:00 a.m. Planting at Birchwood, Starr Farm Road  

TUESDAY, June 6: Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont (FGCV)
Annual Meeting @ Philo Ridge Farm in Charlotte, VT 10:00 am
Installation of Doris Van Mullen as Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont state president.
Guest speaker: Gail Kirby, BGC member. Topic: "Herbs for Health"

 WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7:
Join club members in the BUTTERFLY Garden at 9:00 a.m. and GRANDMA & GRANDPA Gardens at 10:00 a.m.
Vermont Garden Park, 1100 Dorset Street. Bring garden tools.

THURSDAY, JUNE 8:
SHARE The Love of gardening – take a bouquet of flowers, a houseplant or perennial to a friend or neighbor. Bring an arrangement to a local school, store, or business along with a National Garden Club poster. Encourage others to join a local garden club!

FRIDAY, JUNE 9:
Tour a local garden center, visit a Farmer’s Market, enjoy a nearby vineyard, walk through a local art gallery or peruse your favorite Gardening book.

SATURDAY, JUNE 10:
Rest and rejuvenate – Read a book, take a walk or enjoy a nap in your favorite garden space. Watch your favorite garden movie or a YouTube video of a garden you would like to someday visit or for inspiration.

Fiction:
The Secret Garden – A classic about a young girl sent to live with her uncle on his remote country estate in the Yorkshire moors. While exploring, she discovers a secret garden.
Green Fingers – A Quirky British 90’s classic inspired by the true story of convicts becoming gifted gardeners and being allowed to enter their prize flowers in the Hampton Court Garden Show.
Dare To Be Wild – A true story of a garden designer and her designs for the Chelsea Flower Show. Sweeping landscapes, lovely gardens and a little bit of love.
A Little Chaos – Starring Kate Winslet as a 17th century landscape gardener at Versailles.
Non-Fiction:
The Gardener- A Dedication to Frank Cabot, “amateur” gardener, horticulturist and influential philanthropist who created The Garden Conservancy
Back to Eden – An educational film about no-till gardening.

MONTREAL BOTANICAL GARDENS TRIP  WITH HOST CHARLIE NARDOZZI
 
                                           FRIDAY JUNE 30, 2023 
IN THE MORNING MEET YOUR GARDEN HOST CHARLIE NARDOZZI AND TRIP DIRECTOR DEB FLANDERS. BOARD OUR PRIVATE COACH AT THE DOUBLETREE BY HILTON HOTEL ON WILLISTON ROAD IN SO. BURLINGTON AND DEPART FOR A FULL DAY EXCURSION TO MONTREAL’S BOTANICAL GARDENS.   

 ENJOY EXPLORING THE GARDENS AND SPECIAL EXHIBITS WITH THE GUIDANCE OF CHARLIE NARDOZZI. A BOXED LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED FOR EACH PARTICIPANT.  AFTER OUR EXTENDED VISIT WE’LL RETURN TO BURLINGTON IN THE EARLY EVENING.

All members of the Burlington Garden Club are invited to participate in the Summer Garden Tours. Each tour is a visit to one garden. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch. Details of the tour will be announced in 
advance by email, with a request for an RSVP. Please inform the coordinator if your plans change, as it is a courtesy to our host to have an accurate count of attendees. Those without email may request a phone contact.

                 MONTHLY BGC MEETINGS 
                                held at FAITH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
                               899 DORSET STREET, SOUTH BURLINGTON

Unless otherwise noted, Club meetings are open to the community  with no admission fees, and held at 12:00 on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Faith United Methodist Church. After a short social time with refreshments -  12:00-12:30 pm, then a brief business meeting (12:30 - 1:00 pm), and starting at 1:00 pm there will be a presentation on a variety of subjects.

It’s not so much what we look at that matters, it’s what we see. In this inspirational program, Patterson Webster suggests three steps to help you to get the most out of a garden visit – and shows you how to apply the ideas to your garden at home
Using her photographs of gardens in Europe and North America, she shows how visiting other gardens allows us to see our own gardens with fresh eyes, helping us to pinpoint what works and what doesn’t

Arabella will walk us thru the tools we have on our i-phones, and
will present a PowerPoint on judging photography.
Arabella is an accredited photography judge for the Photography Society of
America, and a NGC master judge, and a Garden Club of America
judge emeritus in Design, Horticulture and Photography.

Forests play a crucial role in preserving our environment.  How does climate change affect wildlife, trees, and plant habitat in our forests?  How do we become stewards to protect our forests on our land or elsewhere?  Ethan will provide answers for these timely, important questions.

Topic: “Creating a Mini Meadow: Grow a Little Patch of Colorful Flowers Anywhere around Your Yard”!
Speaker: Mike Lizotte
Coordinated by Doris Van Mullen
Mike will take us through the process of successfully creating a miniature meadow that suits their climate, soil, and growing goals, whether planting to beautify a hell strip, halt erosion, fill a boggy spot, or establish a nesting area for bees and butterflies. Mike known as the Seed Man will discuss the keys to creating, caring for, and reaping the rewards of thriving meadows through the seasons, year after year.
